Personal business is the term used to describe activities or tasks that are managed by a business, individual or an the individual on their own. Examples include managing finances, completing household chores, and keeping appointments. It could also refer to creating and running a business based on one’s skills as well as interests and experience as a sole proprietor.

While privacy laws regarding data vary from countries to countries and states to state but they all share the same definitions for what is considered to be personal information. Don’t forget to also check the locations where sensitive information could be stored outside of your office. This includes the homes of employees and their computers that work from home.

PII that is sensitive needs to be secured both in transit as well as at rest and only kept for as long as is necessary for business purposes. This includes biometrics, medical information that is covered by the Health Insurance Accountability and Portability Act(HIPAA), unique identification codes such as passports or Social Security Numbers and employee records of personnel.
